Cognac: it's a man drink. Not only has it graced the dinner tables of gentlemen and sworthy soldiers alike, it's the most refined way to finish off a hearty meal. The French do it and let's face it, they're never wrong when it comes to food. Yet with this most noble of drinks, a plastic beaker just will not do and that's where Danish designer Rikke Hagen's work comes in.
Hagen scrapped the traditional stem as it was 'irrating' her, and created the vessels to enhance a drink's colour, temperature, movement and bouquet. They also nestle in your hand in a pleasing manner - and look brilliant, which make them a must-have in our book |

For pretty and decorative, there is lighting by Flavia del Pra, whose ceramic lamps sells for about £300. Quirky kitchenlia comes from the Danish brand Normann Copenhagen: shown here is the stainless-steel Familia casserole with lid by Ole Jensen (£169.50) and the oak and melamine salad set (£24). There is also sleek and modern in the shape of Reno Bonzo's Gaivota rocking chair (£832). While my taste generally is for things that look urban, graphic and gritty, even I occasionally need a fix of granny chic. Which is why I was drawn to these irrestibly fresh-looking vases shaped like grass. True: these trompe l'oeil creations are more 1930s kitch than country-cottage twee. Yet their delicate, watercolour like shade of green, which will camouflage the stems of flowers a bit, make the whole effect softer, rather romantic. Could the grass be greener? Well, yes: if only they also had the delicious smell of newly mown grass too.... |
