Travelling to Sydney

Travel tips for Sydney, Australia

We are going to Sydney and I’m SO excited, I haven’t been there for two decades!

It looks like my 4 feel-good things to achieve this year are onto a good start (have you written down yours yet?)

When Steve and I fell in love nineteen years ago and decided to spend our lives together, besides the fact that I was super fit and he had hair :-), we agreed to live our lives like a big Adventure and one of the things we wanted to do, was moving to Sydney.

So we’re not moving there (yet!) but I’m relishing the idea to experience Sydney again as a local, in case one day we decide to move there, sell our home in London.

That’s why I need your help… I would love to get your travel tips to make the most of Sydney as a local.

I know a lot of my readers come from Australia and I would be hugely grateful if you could share some travel tips on which areas to stay by the beach.

I’m thinking Bondi beach, North Bondi but there is probably a few others beach areas around Sydney that are hidden gems and are great places to live.

What would you suggest? What about Byron Bay? Is it worth spending some time there and if so how many days and where? Last time, I spent some days in Cairns and absolutely loved it.

Or maybe you know some nice places to stay. I would really appreciate any insights and travel tips you could share with me, thanks in advance!

  1. Wow! So exciting. Australia is on my to visit list for sure. One of the blogs I dip in and out of is Sarah is a brit who upped and moved to Sydney many years ago with her 3 kiddos. she would definately have some pointers for you :-) When do you go? x

Oh I am jealous. I am hoping we will be visiting Oz this year. I lived there nearly 12 years ago when my son was only 18 months. We lived in Balmain which is one of the oldest and loveliest suburbs in Sydney’s Inner West. It feels like a village and is only 10 minutes by bus or ferry ( which I totally recommend)into the CBD. My son learnt to swim in the Dawn Frazer baths which is a tidal salt water pool .Balmain is a great place to hang out , visit , shop or go to the market and wander down to Rozelle which is also has a fab market and some wonderful coffee shops . My favourite beach town is Avalon which is about 45 mins outside of Sydney on the North Shore. It has a very laid back feel and has one of my favourite shops Bassike.
Bondi is great but I prefer Tamarama or Clovelly . What ever you do you can’t help but have a great time.

Ah you are going to love it! The weather is so beautiful here at the moment. I don’t know Sydney that well but I’ve heard that Manly and the Northern Beaches are beautiful, less touristy than Bondi.
As for Byron Bay, Alex and I went there in November and I can’t recommend it enough! It has such a beachy/chilled/hippy vibe with amazing healthy food and lots of surfing.

I am a Sydney girl born and bred and nowlive in the Southern Highlands – about 1.5 hours out of Sydney. The Highlands are beautiful – great wineries, lovely country side, good restaurants and cafes.. and only an hour to the beautiful south coast.

If you want a beautiful beach in Feb / March i recommend Hyams Beach. Contact Hyams Beach Real Estate to book a house.

My suggestion – hire a car, get out of Sydney and come down to the highlands fora couple of days (lots of horse riding for Mila if she is keen) and then head down to Hyams Beach. Other places to visit on the way – Berry – one of my favourite little towns…

Very welcome to visit us if you make it down. My daughter Isabel is the same age! Amelia xx

  5. Hi Karine,

I’ve just got back from Sydney as my sister lives there. We had the most amazing time. I’ve just written a post on our blog all about our trip, recommendations and places we loved. Heres the link There is the obvious tourist, ‘must see’ places but we fell in love with the suburbs and further afield, great advice to get a car and explore! Food amazing, so healthy and fresh. Just a fantastic lifestyle out there with so much to see.

p.s just wanted to say thank you for your post regarding Pinterest, it’s really helped me and I have changed it all around. Would love to know more about your upcoming events in March, have signed up to the newsletter.

    Enjoy Oz!
    All the best for 2016
    Cass xx

  6. I must have missed this post but just came across it whilst doing some searching myself. We are going to Sydney in December and staying for 9 days in an air bnb which looks amazing, then flying to Byron which was one of my favourite places from my visit pre kids, then Noosa…also a fave, then the WhitSundays for Christmas before heading to New Zealand for 3 weeks in January. We are trying to cover both islands and just cancelled our flights home to squeeze out a couple more days!! No amount of time seems long enough. I will definitely pass on some tips for you from my time there in December and make use of the ones above. (thanks guys!) We just got back from Hossegor too which is our 5th visit. I love it so much that i think you’d really love Byron. x

    • Thanks Tracey, our plans have changed and we will probably go to Bali in December but nothing is set in stone yet. I would love to know the airbnb you found, maybe you can send me the details via Facebook. Thanks
