Limited edition of the wishbone chair

Limited Edition CH24 Wishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner

The wishbone chair in its natural finish, which you can see in this beautiful Scandinavian home, is by far, my favourite wooden chair.

And if you love it too love or simply love Scandinavian design, you are in for a real treat and something very special!

To celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s 104th birthday on April 2, Carl Hansen & Søn is releasing a special edition of the iconic CH24 Wishbone Chair in Ancient Oak.

Wegner first designed the Wishbone Chair, known for its distinctive wishbone-shaped backrest, in 1949, and the chair has been in continuous production since 1950.
It is the result of an intense and uncompromising partnership between Wegner and the skilled craftsmen who contributed to the design’s demanding development work.

Almost 70 years after coming into existence, the Wishbone Chair continues to be manually assembled by skilled craftsmen who handle the chair’s 14 parts and hand-weave the seat from 120 meters of paper cord before the finished chair can leave the furniture factory in Gelsted, on the Danish island of Funen.

Often I feel we forget why classic designs like these come with a hefty price tag so I think it’s important to remind ourselves and appreciate the craft, the skills and hours that go into making furniture pieces like these…

Special edition with engraved signature

The Limited Edition has been named Ancient Oak in reference to the exceptionally well-preserved, thousand-year-old pieces of oak occasionally found in peat bogs.
Such oak acquires distinctive characteristics through its contact with the iron salts in the bog – and is quite rare.
Employing modern processing and dyeing techniques, Carl Hansen & Søn has recreated the characteristic look and qualities of bog oak with the Ancient Oak variant.

“The resulting refined expression, deep, warm color, and strength match the elegance of the Wishbone Chair and beautifully harmonize with its natural woven paper cord seat. Ancient Oak complements Hans J. Wegner’s organic design and emphasises the furniture designer’s innovative vision,” says Carl Hansen & Son CEO, Knud Erik Hansen

The special-edition Wishbone Chair in Ancient Oak will only be available on April 2-3, 2018.

All chairs purchased over the course of these two days will come with a brass plate engraved with Hans J. Wegner’s signature and date of birth, and discreetly placed on the inside of the chair’s frame.
The engraving reproduces Wegner’s signature with a high degree of detail, paying respect to the master designer’s own high craftsmanship standards so there is no doubt that you will get something very special if you manage to get your hands on one.Limited Edition CH24 Wishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner

Danish architect Hans J. Wegner is considered a pioneering furniture designer of the twentieth
century. He was a real driving force behind ‘Danish Modern’ and helped change the general public’s view of furniture in the 1950s and 1960s.

Known as the “Master of chair”, Wegner was really passionate about designing chairs and designed over 500 chairs and I hope one day, I will be the proud Owner of one of them.

In the UK, the chair is available from Skandium, Twentytwentyone and the Conran shop (in France too). What do you think of this Limited Edition?
