A dark office corner with Hübsch

A dark office corner before and after

*This post includes gifted items During phase 1 of the renovations at CASA PYLA, I was keen to try out a really dark room for a change. With the help of Hübsch Interiors and Farrow & Ball, I created this intimate and minimalist workspace in one of the bedrooms. Just to give you a bit of a background on our house plans, we signed the deed for villa Bagatelles (which I rebranded CASA PYLA) on my birthday in March ’19. Given our project to rehabilitate this big house, I knew we couldn’t achieve all we wanted to do before Summer ’19. So I broke down the work in several phases. March-June ’19: Freshening up the house to make it welcoming and liveable for Summer ’19. December-June ’20: Tackling the major renovations (new windows, the concrete floor on the ground floor, new bathrooms, etc) September ’20: planning a series of creative workshops. As soon as we got the keys, I started three months of intensive renovations to create a natural, Summer vibe in this old house. The bedroom …

How to decorate a bedroom with a dark grey feature wall

Stylish update for our grey bedroom

Updating our bedroom & its beautiful dark grey wall was on my list of things to do. As soon as I recovered from the low blood pressure that hit me and let me with very little energy for three weeks, I tackled all the things on my to-do list. I wanted to give our bedroom a new, fresh look for Spring. I finally unpacked the new stonewashed linen duvet cover in white I got during my last trip to London. You can’t beat white for a fresh look, can you!!? I also added a gorgeous, new print above our bed. To get this print made, I used Mapiful, a website that lets you choose any location in the world (even a small town) and get it printed on a nice poster. It’s a fantastic concept. I can think of several friends and family members I could treat with one of those prints featuring a place that would mean something to them. Bordeaux is the city where I went to University. I met some of my best friends there …

White bedroom + white floorboards

White bedroom + white floorboards

Here is a sneak-peek of our white bedroom with white floorboards and if you are in need of new bed linens, you may find this post useful. We had some guests that had stained some of our bed linens with pizza and wine so I had to purchase new bed linens from The White Company and Muji. From Muji, I got these soft washed duvets for all the single beds in our home. Five years ago, I had bought an organic white duvet cover from Muji for Mila’s bedroom and at the time, I wish I had bought more because the cotton had a really nice texture that felt like linen. I don’t think these are organic but they still have a really nice texture to them. Made.com has also some nice stonewashed linens. I recently bought this Brisa stonewashed linen bed set in pure white for our home in France but I haven’t unpacked it yet. For our bedroom and the bedroom in the loft conversion, I ordered the Savoy duvet cover in white. I had …

How to use black chalkboard paint in the bedroom

How to use black chalkboard paint in the bedroom

We often see black chalkboard walls in kitchens, workspaces or even the kids bedrooms but how about using it in your own bedroom… Would you be open to the idea? I have used Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe in our bedroom in France (you can see more photos on Instagram) which creates a nice, design statement statement in a room that was fairly plain to begin with, with the exception of the French windows leading onto the garden and which are a nice feature. If you’re not ready to make the jump to a black chalkboard wall, I have compiled a lot of beautiful bedrooms painted with dark walls on Pinterest. However, chalkboard paint adds something that traditional paint doesn’t and that is…TEXTURES Love it or hate it, once you’ve written a few messages and then wipe them off to write new ones, chalk adds texture and character to a wall and a room like nothing else does. I say love or hate, because personally, I love the look and texture of chalk writing on a wall and it makes a really nice …

WEEKEND#

I can’t tell you how much I love this bedroom. The matte black floorboards, the hues of dark and light grey stonewashed linen on the bed, the sheet of metal against the wall that becomes art…I could spend the whole weekend there. We’re off to Jarnac on Sunday to a commemorative rugby match the Club has organised in memory of my dad. A part of me is looking forward to hearing stories about him but I know this is going to be a difficult day for us all. Yesterday, the weather was so beautiful that almost forgot he was gone, for a split second, I thought it was a mistake, that he would soon come back from his daily walk and then it hit me that it wasn’t. My mum forwarded me this very well written article about the loss of a parent which you may find useful if you are going through the same thing. It’s in French but you can copy the link in Google translate to read it in English. Have a lovely, soothing weekend my dearest …

London calling

I’m heading back to London on Sunday for a styling job which I’m really excited about. Ideal Home magazine is also coming to photograph our kitchen and as my company BODIE and FOU is exhibiting our prints collection at Design Junction from 24th to 27th, I will be attending our stand there too (I hope to meet some of you there!) I was struggling to leave this place when the weather was nice but now that it’s pouring down rain, it’s getting a lot easier. Here is a random bunch of photos of our home I took with my iPhone a few months ago (I have so many photos to go through, it’s insane!) but I’m looking forward to spending some time in this gorgeous space. I have missed that room. I’m so in love with the resin floor we added throughout the ground floor – still need to source some chairs though….I can’t wait to hang out in our beautiful tadelakt bathroom, potter around the kitchen, and finish decorating our bedroom too. It’s almost there but I have a few …

Using dark hues in the bedroom

I keep being asked what shade of paint I used on the wall of our bedroom in France. I used Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball which is a deep dark grey. I initially used the estate emulsion which has a lovely chalky finish but it shows marks a lot more. So over the past few years, I’ve freshened up our walls with the modern emulsion which has a low sheen and most importantly is waterproof.
