The inspiration for this photoshoot was this photo, which has nothing to do with the result but that’s how inspiration works. A theme, a colour, a person can trigger a whole set of emotions and take your imagination to places it has never been. When I sent the photo to Perrine, she told me she looked nothing like the girl on the photo but she trusted me. We shot at Le Blockhaus. The place was packed and yet it looks like we were the only two people at the bottom of the Dune of Pyla, facing the bay…Photography & Styling: Karine Candice Köng Model: Perrine Fifadji Singer, Dancer & Choregrapher, Perrine will start giving singing lessons in Bordeaux from October 2016. The other day, I was flicking through a decoration magazine with a friend from Australia and she asked me if I ever had a bedroom with a headboard when I was growing up in France. I thought about it for a while and told her it was actually the opposite…I always had a headboard in my parents’ home… Bless my mum for her irreproachable sense of style, but at some point, I even had a four poster bed and pink Toile de Jouy wallpaper in my bedroom. It looked so French, it was a dream comes true for my American penpal. I moved towards modern, Scandinavian design when I went to University, discovered the Swedish giant and then, the Scandinavian design legacy with designs from Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Verner Panton to name a few. Since then, I think my style has naturally evolved between the stylish French style I grew up with, the modern Scandinavian style I embraced and the relaxed New-Zealander style I married into. True to be told, while I consider myself a modernist, I still love headboards and …
Real life bedroom or How to achieve the effortless look in the bedroom after a certain someone came for a cuddle and used our bed as a practice for her gymnastic competition next week…Yet I wouldn’t change a thing because one day, she will think it’s totally uncool to come and give us a cuddle. Have a great weekend SHOP THE STORY:
I can’t tell you how much I love this bedroom. The matte black floorboards, the hues of dark and light grey stonewashed linen on the bed, the sheet of metal against the wall that becomes art…I could spend the whole weekend there. We’re off to Jarnac on Sunday to a commemorative rugby match the Club has organised in memory of my dad. A part of me is looking forward to hearing stories about him but I know this is going to be a difficult day for us all. Yesterday, the weather was so beautiful that almost forgot he was gone, for a split second, I thought it was a mistake, that he would soon come back from his daily walk and then it hit me that it wasn’t. My mum forwarded me this very well written article about the loss of a parent which you may find useful if you are going through the same thing. It’s in French but you can copy the link in Google translate to read it in English. Have a lovely, soothing weekend my dearest …
A bit of inspiration for the weekend… I’m in love these felt shades that were custom-made by i29 for this project. Isn’t this duo gorgeous? We have friends staying with us this weekend so it will be two days filled with good food, good wine, laughter, trips to the skatepark with the kids, eating oysters and chilling out around Steve’s BBQ wrapped in super soft jumpers. I keep being asked what shade of paint I used on the wall of our bedroom in France. I used Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball which is a deep dark grey. I initially used the estate emulsion which has a lovely chalky finish but it shows marks a lot more. So over the past few years, I’ve freshened up our walls with the modern emulsion which has a low sheen and most importantly is waterproof.
I have been dreaming about a grey sofa for our home in France since 2013 (see blog post then) for our 8 years old Ikea sofa, which is surprisingly still very comfy so I’m getting a new cover done by Bemz. If you are not familiar with Bemz, I think it’s one of the smartest concept created in these last few years.
