I keep being asked what shade of paint I used on the wall of our bedroom in France. I used Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball which is a deep dark grey. I initially used the estate emulsion which has a lovely chalky finish but it shows marks a lot more. So over the past few years, I’ve freshened up our walls with the modern emulsion which has a low sheen and most importantly is waterproof.
Beautiful, soft, dark linen like this anthracite duvet cover looks amazing against a dark background and I usually mix them with blue grey pillow cases and for an autumnal look, I use this warm hue.
In winter time, I found dark bedrooms quite soothing, like a shelter from the bad weather and cold. Stuck in bed with a pile of my fav decoration magazines, my laptop and a teapot filled with green tea, life is good.1. | 2. | 3. | 4.

Snap! I bought Down Pipe for my bedroom when we moved house in January and only just started painting this week! Was going to just leave it on one wall after husband declared it “very dark”, but I love it and know the whole room can take it. It’s very elegant and I agree – it makes the room very comforting and restful.
Good new Marie! I forgot to say that I kept the other 3 walls white
Love the idea of charcoal grey, especially the bed cover. Creates such an interesting mood. Beautiful shots!
